Für alle Open Source Fans ist das erste Februar-Wochenende immer ein ganz besonderes: Alljährlich findet an diesem das Free and Open Source Developers‘ European Meeting (FOSDEM) in Brüssel statt. Dies ist immer eine gute Gelegenheit, die Menschen hinter den bekanntesten Open-Source-Projekten kennenzulernen. Besonders in diesem Jahr zeigte die Besucherzahl einmal mehr, dass die Open Source Branche kein Nischendasein mehr führt.

Vorort können die Teilnehmer selbst entscheiden, ob sie zu einem der Vorträge in den Main Tracks oder zu einem einem Talk in den spezialisierten Devrooms gehen.  Ebenso haben sie die Möglichkeit sich direkt an den Aussteller-Ständen zu informieren. Dies ist eine gute Gelegenheit, die Gesichter hinter seinem persönlichen Lieblingsprojekt kennenzulernen. Wir haben zum Beispiel sehr interessante Gespräche mit den Teams hinter Foreman und Pulp geführt. Besonders spannend dabei war der Austausch mit Austin Macdonald über die neusten Änderungen bei Pulp3. Nur ein paar Schritte weiter befanden sich die Stände von bekannten Distributionen wie Debian, openSUSE, CentOS Fedora und Gentoo. Zusätzlich waren auch Teams von Gitlab und Python vor Ort.

Publikumsmagnet waren dieses Jahr definitiv alle Talks rund um Kubernetes  und Ansible. Besonders mit Blick auf Kubernetes ist kcli interessant: Das Orchestrierungs-Tool für QEMU, libvirt, Kubernetes und viele weitere wurde im Virtualisierungs- und IaaS-Devroom präsentiert.

Während in den Main Tracks in diesem Jahr der Fokus auf den Themen Datenbanken, Speicherhardware und Datenschutz lag, wurde sich in den den Devrooms vor allem mit Containertechnologien, Infra-Management, Software defined Storage, Virtualisierung sowie mit IaaS und Python beschäftigt.

Natürlich war auch wieder reichlich für Speiß‘ und Trank gesorgt – selbstverständlich gab’s an den Essenständen leckere belgische Waffeln. So konnte man sich in lockerer Umgebung bei der ein oder anderen kulinarischen Köstlichkeit mit verschiedenen Leuten austauschen.

Nach unserem Besuch auf der FOSDEM ging es für uns aber noch nicht nach Hause, sondern weiter auf Config Management Camp. Unseren Rückblick dazu findet Ihr demnächst auf unserem Blog.

For those, who love open source, there is the first weekend in February, where the Free and Open source Software Developers‘ European Meeting (FOSDEM) in Brussels takes place. Again, this year it offered a good opportunity, to get to know the people behind out most loved open source projects. Furthermore, the number of visitors showed that the community is ever growing and the open source community is by far not a niche.

Once there, you could decide, whether to go to one of the main tracks, one of the many more specialized devrooms or stands. This way you had a great opportunity to get to know the persons behind your favorite projects.

As an example the teams behind foreman and pulp -were present and happy to have a chat with you. For example Austin Macdonald told about the latest changes of Pulp3. So you could further talk to him about the latest changes or feature requests. Right at the next corner were major distributions present like, Debian, openSuse, CentOS, Fedora and Gentoo. Close-by were also further stands of Gitlab, python and many more.

Whether you went to the main tracks or to the devrooms, you noticed the major crowd puller were talks about Kubernetes and Ansible. Whereas the first one is a great container orchestration, the latter one is a great tool for configuration management and automation. In the Virtualization and IaaS devroom was kcli

presented, which is one tool for qemu, libvirt, Kubernetes and others.

As an example of interests, represented by the main tracks, the topics of Database, Storage Hardware and privacy were on focus. For the devrooms there were a lot different topics for many groups of interest. Container, Infra-Management, Software defined storage, Virtualization and IaaS, as well as python, were just a selection of the devrooms‘ topic and were well visited.

If you needed refreshments, food trucks with waffles and other treats were present, too. Any time you could talk to many different people or join there conversation. After all, this is a great place to meet people and exchange ideas.

If you are still hungry fore more, close-by in Gent is the Config Management Camp, where talks are held by the ATIX crew and you can get hands-on practice with different configuration management tools and other projects.

Hopefully, next year you are there, too. As for me I enjoyed the atmosphere there.
